  5. What language can I complete my application in?

As English is now the most common second language used around the world, we need to rely on it to conduct the training during the Summer School. By using English during the training, we are increasing the chances that participants will be able to express their views in a language also understood by others. In addition, conducting the training in English allows us to welcome applications from a larger pool of eligible participants. Given the complexity of topics covered during training, we estimate that you would need to have an upper-intermediate English proficiency level. As a guide, this level roughly corresponds to:

    • EF level: B2 Upper intermediate
    • Cambridge ESOL Main Suite: FCE
    • Cambridge ESOL BEC: Vantage
    • IELTS: 5-6
    • TOEFL: 87-109
    • TOEIC Listening & Reading: 400-485
    • TOEIC Speaking & Writing: 155-195

Also, the only language common among members of the selection committee is English. Given this, completing your application is English is required.

In addition, the organizers will send a message to the USA embassy serving your country to alert them of the fact that you will soon apply for a visa to the USA. Please note that this letter of invitation does not automatically guarantee the issuance of a visa to the USA, because USA authorities have the right to refuse to issue a visa even though all required documentation was submitted. The organizers of the Summer School cannot appeal any decision made by local USA embassies.

In addition, the participants will be responsible to apply for any required exit and transit visa needed to reach the USA. More information on this will be provided to selected participants

  14. I am not linked to any organization or network; I am not a student, a blogger or a social entrepreneur. Am I eligible to apply to the Summer School?

A key objective of the Summer School is to allow the selected participants to disseminate what they will learn through their network once they return home. Therefore, if you are not linked to any network or organization, this outreach becomes much more difficult. We encourage you to join an organization or network and apply next year.

  15. I want to pay all the costs related to my travel to New York and attend the Summer School without going through the selection process. Is this possible?

Only participants identified through the official selection process can attend the Summer School.
